Hymn 693: Blessed Assurance Assurance

Prayer of Confession

Our great Shepherd, we praise You because Your goodness and mercy follow us all the days of our lives. Yet, our Father, we so often act as though You were distant and unloving. Instead of seeing Your gracious providence in our lives, we grumble and complain when things do not go our way. We tend to be selfish rather than looking to the needs of others. We confess our lack of trust and ingratitude. Give us faith to trust You in plenty and in want, in sickness and in health. Help us to forsake all things which we would put before You, so we might love You with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: 1 John 4:9–10

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Doxology 733 Lasst Uns Erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; alleluia, alleluia!
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Question: What is the reason annexed to the third commandment? (Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain...)
Answer: The reason annexed to the third commandment is, that however the breakers of this commandment may escape punishment from men, yet the Lord our God will not suffer them to escape from His righteous judgment.
