Prelude: Sechs Bagatellen, No. 1: Andante con moto Ludwig van Beethoven Bob Yang, piano

Call to Worship: Psalm 66:1–4

Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise!
Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.
All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.”

Doxology Lasst Uns Erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; alleluia, alleluia!
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Invocation

Hymn 18: Ye Holy Angels Bright Darwall

Text: Richard Baxter (1672)

You holy angels bright, who wait at God's right hand,
or through the realms of light fly at your Lord's command,
assist our song, for else the theme too high doth seem for mortal tongue.

You blessed souls at rest, who ran this earthly race,
and now, from sin released, behold the Savior's face;
God’s praises sound, as in his sight with sweet delight you do abound.

All nations of the earth, extol the world's great King;
with melody and mirth his glorious praises sing;
for he still reigns, and will bring low the proudest foe that him disdains.

Sing forth Jehovah’s praise, you saints, that on him call!
Him magnify always, his holy churches all!
In him rejoice, and there proclaim his holy name with sounding voice. (continued on next page)

My soul, bear now your part, triumph in God above;
with a well-tuned heart sing now the songs of love;
you are his own, whose precious blood shed for your good his love made known.

Away, distrustful care! I have your promise, Lord;
to banish all despair, I have your oath and word;
and therefore I shall see your face and there your grace shall magnify.

With your triumphant flock then I shall numbered be;
built on th’eternal Rock, his glory we shall see.
The heav’ns so high with praise shall ring and all shall sing in harmony.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture Reading: Joshua 3:14–17

14 So when the people set out from their tents to pass over the Jordan with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people, 15 and as soon as those bearing the ark had come as far as the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the brink of the water (now the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest), 16 the waters coming down from above stood and rose up in a heap very far away, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, and those flowing down toward the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. And the people passed over opposite Jericho. 17 Now the priests bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firmly on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, and all Israel was passing over on dry ground until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan.

Multilingual Prayer

Hymn 178: There Is No Name So Sweet on Earth The Sweetest Name Text: Anonymous (1858)

There is no name so sweet on earth, no name so sweet in heaven,
the name before his wondrous birth to Christ the Savior given.

Refrain
We love to sing around our King, and hail him blessed Jesus;

for there's no word ear ever heard so dear, so sweet as "Jesus."

And when he hung upon the tree, they wrote this name above him;
that all might see the reason we forevermore must love him. (Refrain)

So now, upon his Father's throne, almighty to release us
from sin and pains, he gladly reigns, the Prince and Savior Jesus. (Refrain)

To Jesus ev'ry knee shall bow, and ev'ry tongue confess him,
and we unite with saints in light, our only Lord to bless him. (Refrain)

O Jesus, by that matchless name, your grace shall fail us never;
today as yesterday the same, you art the same forever. (Refrain)

Offertory: Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee arr. Tedd Smith Bob Yang, piano

Sermon Passage: John 5:30–47

30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. 31 If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from people.

42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?
45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

Hymn 653: Jesus Is All the World to Me Elizabeth

Text: Will L. Thompson (1904)

Jesus is all the world to me, my life, my joy, my all;
he is my strength from day to day, without him I would fall.
When I am sad, to him I go, no other one can cheer me so;
when I am sad, he makes me glad, he’s my Friend.

Jesus is all the world to me, my Friend in trials sore;
I go to him for blessings, and he gives them o’er and o’er.
He sends the sunshine and the rain, he sends the harvest’s golden grain;
sunshine and rain, harvest of grain, he’s my Friend.

Jesus is all the world to me, and true to him I’ll be;
oh, how could I this Friend deny, when he’s so true to me?
Following him I know I’m right, he watches o’er me day and night;
following him, by day and night, he’s my Friend.

Jesus is all the world to me, I want no better friend;
I trust him now, I’ll trust him when life’s fleeting days shall end.
Beautiful life with such a Friend; beautiful life that has no end;
eternal life, eternal joy, he’s my Friend.

Benediction
