Prelude: Arabesque, Op. 18 Robert Schumann Bob Yang, piano

Call to Worship: Psalm 59:16–17

I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me a fortress.
O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress,
the God who shows me steadfast love.

Doxology Lasst Uns Erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; alleluia, alleluia!
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Invocation

Hymn 77: Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven Andrews

Text: Henry Lyte (1834)

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, to his feet your tribute bring;
ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who, like me, his praise should sing?
Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King.

Praise him for his grace and favor to our fathers in distress;
praise him, still the same forever, slow to chide and swift to bless;
Alleluia! Alleluia! Glorious in his faithfulness.

Father-like, he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows;
in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes;
Alleluia! Alleluia! Widely as his mercy goes.

Frail as summer’s flow’r we flourish, blows the wind and it is gone;
but while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the High Eternal One.

Angels, help us to adore him; you behold him face to face;
sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space,
Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture Reading: Joshua 2:22–24

22 They departed and went into the hills and remained there three days until the pursuers returned, and the pursuers searched all along the way and found nothing. 23 Then the two men returned. They came down from the hills and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them. 24 And they said to Joshua, “Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands. And also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away because of us."

Hymn 109: Lord, My Weak Thought in Vain Would Climb Canonbury
Text: Ray Palmer (1858)

Lord, my weak thought in vain would climb to search the starry vault profound;
in vain would wing her flight sublime to find creation's utmost bound.

But weaker yet that thought must prove to search thy great eternal plan,
thy sovereign counsels, born of love long ages ere the world began.

When my dim reason would demand why that, or this, thou dost ordain,
by some vast deep I seem to stand, whose secrets I must ask in vain.

When doubts disturb my troubled breast, and all is dark as night to me,
here, as on solid rock, I rest - that so it seemeth good to thee.

Be this my joy, that evermore thou rulest all things at thy will;
thy sovereign wisdom I adore, and calmly, sweetly, trust thee still.

Sermon Passage: Luke 4:23–24

23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown."

Hymn 95: Though Troubles Assail Us St. Denio

Text: John Newton (1779)

Though troubles assail us and dangers affright,
though friends should all fail us and foes all unite,
yet one thing secures us, whatever betide,
the promise assures us, “The Lord will provide.”

The birds, without garner or storehouse, are fed;
from them let us learn to trust God for our bread.
His saints what is fitting shall ne’er be denied
so long as ‘tis written, “The Lord will provide.”

When Satan assails us to stop up our path,
and courage all fails us, we triumph by faith.
He cannot take from us, though oft he has tried,
this heart-cheering promise, “The Lord will provide.”

No strength of our own and no goodness we claim;
yet, since we have known of the Savior’s great name,
in this our strong tower for safety we hide:
the Lord is our power, “The Lord will provide.”
