Prelude: Rondino on a Theme of Beethoven Fritz Kreisler Tom Jackson, violin; Colin Howland, piano

Call to Worship: Psalm 57:7–11

My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody!
Awake, my glory! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn!
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations.
For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!

Doxology Lasst Uns Erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; alleluia, alleluia!
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Hymn 12: Exalt the Lord, His Praise Proclaim Creation

Text: The Psalter (1912)

Exalt the Lord, his praise proclaim; all ye his servants, praise his name,
who in the Lord's house ever stand and humbly serve at his command.
The Lord is good, his praise proclaim; since it is pleasant, praise his name;
his people for his own he takes and his own peculiar treasure makes.

I know the Lord is high in state, above all gods our Lord is great;
the Lord performs what he decrees, in heav'n and earth, in depths and seas.
He makes the vapors to ascend in clouds from earth's remotest end;
the lightnings flash at his command; he holds the tempest in his hand.

Exalt the Lord, his praise proclaim; all ye his servants, praise his name,
who in the Lord's house ever stand and humbly serve at his command.
Forever praise and bless his name, and in the church his praise proclaim;
in Zion is his dwelling place; praise ye the Lord, show forth his grace.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture Reading: Joshua 2:8–21

8 Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof 9 and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. 10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction.11 And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. 12 Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a sure sign 13 that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” 14 And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” 15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall. 16 And she said to them, “Go into the hills, or the pursuers will encounter you, and hide there three days until the pursuers have returned. Then afterward you may go your way.” 17 The men said to her, “We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear. 18 Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father's household. 19 Then if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be guiltless. But if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head. 20 But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect to your oath that you have made us swear.”
21 And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

Hymn 165: Ye Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim Lyons
Text: Charles Wesley (1744)

Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim, and publish abroad his wonderful name;
the name, all victorious, of Jesus extol; his kingdom is glorious and rules over all.

God ruleth on high, almighty to save; and still he is nigh–his presence we have.
The great congregation his triumph shall sing, ascribing salvation to Jesus, our King.

Salvation to God, who sits on the throne! Let all cry aloud and honor the Son.
The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, fall down on their faces and worship the Lamb.

Then let us adore, and give him his right, all glory and pow’r, and wisdom and might,
all honor and blessing, with angels above, and thanks never ceasing for infinite love.

Sermon Passage: John 5:15–24

15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” Jesus Is Equal with God
18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. 19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

Hymn 476: The Light of the World Is Jesus Light of the World Text: Philip P. Bliss (1875)

The whole world was lost in the darkness of sin; the light of the world is Jesus;
like sunshine at noonday his glory shone in, the Light of the world is Jesus.

Refrain
Come to the Light, 'tis shining for thee; sweetly the Light has dawned upon me;
once I was blind, but now I can see; the light of the world is Jesus.

No darkness have we who in Jesus abide, the light of the world is Jesus;
we walk in the Light when we follow our Guide, the light of the world is Jesus. (Refrain)

Ye dwellers in darkness with sin-blinded eyes, the light of the world is Jesus;
go, wash at his bidding, and light will arise, the light of the world is Jesus. (Refrain)

No need of the sunlight in heaven, we're told, the light of the world is Jesus;
the Lamb is the Light in the City of Gold, the light of the world is Jesus. (Refrain)

Benediction
