Prelude: Reverie Claude Debussy Tom Jackson, violin; Bob Yang, piano

Call to Worship: Psalm 34:1–3

I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth..
My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!

Doxology Lasst Uns Erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; alleluia, alleluia!
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Invocation

Hymn 134: God Will Take Care of You God Cares Text: Civilla D. Martin (1905)

Be not dismayed whate'er betide, God will take care of you;
beneath his wings of love abide, God will take care of you.

Refrain

God will take care of you, through ev'ry day, o'er all the way;

he will take care of you, God will take care of you.

Through days of toil when heart doth fail, God will take care of you;
when dangers fierce your path assail, God will take care of you. (refrain)

All you may need he will provide, God will take care of you;
trust him and you will be satisfied, God will take care of you. (refrain)

No matter what may be the test, God will take care of you;
lean, weary one, upon his breast, God will take care of you. (refrain)

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture Reading: John 21:20–25

21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” 23 So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” 24 This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true. 25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

Hymn 524: Thy Works, Not Mine, O Christ Darwall

Text: Horatio Bonar (1857)

Thy works, not mine, O Christ, speak gladness to this heart;
they tell me all is done; they bid my fear depart.
To whom, save thee, who canst alone for sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?

Thy pains, not mine, O Christ, upon the shameful tree,
have paid the law’s full price and purchased peace for me.
To whom, save thee, who canst alone for sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?

Thy cross, not mine, O Christ, has borne the awful load
of sins that none in heav’n or earth could bear but God.
To whom, save thee, who canst alone for sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?

Thy righteousness, O Christ, alone can cover me:
no righteousness avails save that which is of thee.
To whom, save thee, who canst alone for sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?

Sermon Passage: John 4:1–26

22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. 23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized 24 (for John had not yet been put in prison).
25 Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27 John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’

29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete.
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.” 31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. 33 Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
