Prelude: Simple Gifts arr. Mark Hayes Colin Howland, piano

Call to Worship: Psalm 32:1–3

Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright.
Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!
Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

Doxology Lasst Uns Erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; alleluia, alleluia!
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Invocation

Hymn 128: God Moves in a Mysterious Way Dundee

Text: William Cowper (1774)

God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform;
he plants his footsteps in the sea, and rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines of never-failing skill
he treasures up his bright designs, and works his sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take; the clouds ye so much dread
are big with mercy, and shall break in blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, but trust him for his grace;
behind a frowning providence he hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast, unfolding ev’ry hour;
the bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flow’r.

Blind unbelief is sure to err, and scan his work in vain;
God is his own interpreter, and he will make it plain.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture Reading: John 21:15–19

15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

Hymn 130: Showers of Blessing Showers of Blessing

Text: Daniel W. White (1883)

"There shall be showers of blessing," this is the promise of love;
there shall be seasons refreshing, sent from the Savior above.

Refrain

Showers of blessing, showers of blessing we need:
mercy drops round us are falling, but for the showers we plead.

"There shall be showers of blessing," precious reviving again;
over the hills and the valleys, sound of abundance of rain. (refrain)

"There shall be showers of blessing," send them upon us, O Lord;
grant to us now a refreshing, come and now honor your Word. (refrain)

"There shall be showers of blessing," oh, that today they might fall,
now as to God we're confessing, now as on Jesus we call! (refrain)

Offertory: I Call on Thee, Lord Johann Sebastian Bach Colin Howland, piano

Sermon Passage: John 3:22–36

22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. 23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized 24 (for John had not yet been put in prison).
25 Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27 John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.” 31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. 33 Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Hymn 420: At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing St. George’s, Windsor

Text: 6th century Latin Hymn, trans. Robert Campbell (1849)

At the Lamb’s high feast we sing praise to our victorious King,
who has washed us in the tide flowing from his pierced side;
praise we him whose love divine gives his sacred blood for wine,
gives his body for the feast, Christ the victim, Christ the priest.

Where the paschal blood is poured, death’s dark angel sheathes his sword;
Israel’s hosts triumphant go through the wave that drowns the foe.
Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed, paschal victim, paschal bread;
with sincerity and love eat we manna from above.

Mighty victim from the sky, pow’rs of hell beneath thee lie;
death is conquered in the fight, thou hast brought us life and light:
hymns of glory and of praise, risen Lord, to thee we raise;
holy Father, praise to thee, with the Spirit, ever be.

Benediction

Spring Parish Meetings 2022

In lieu of a Spring Congregational Meeting, the Session decided at the March meeting to have four Spring Parish Meetings. Over the past three months, the elders have been hearing very positive reports from committees, commissions, and parish elders about what the Lord is doing at Tenth Church. Unfortunately, many of the congregation do not hear of these special blessings and we thought it was appropriate to share a taste of what is happening at our church. The elders feel strongly you will be greatly blessed in hearing from the pastoral staff, the pastors, and/or the ministry leaders. If you have a question you are waiting to ask, or if you have questions about these meetings, please forward an email to your parish elder. In the weeks ahead, you will be receiving special invites from your parish elders.

These four meetings will be held at the following places and times:

Metropolitan: Thursday, May 12, 7pm at Tenth.
Contact Paul Duggan at rhymoraz@gmail.com for more information.

Brandywine/Western Suburb: Wednesday, May 18, 6:30pm at Delaware County Christian School (Lower School Chapel). Contact David Collins at collinsdh@verizon.net, Bruce Garner at brucegarner150@gmail.com, or George McFarland at gmcfarland@dccs.org for more information.

New Jersey: Thursday, May 26, 7:15pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Cherry Hill, NJ.
Contact Jamin Ferner at jaminferner@gmail.com for more information.

Northern Tier: Thursday, June 2, 6:30pm at Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside, in the carriage house. Contact Nasrat Ghattas at nasghattas@gmail.com for more information.

Each parish will provide their own food, desserts, or snacks as desired.
