Hymn 116: For the Beauty of the Earth Dix

Text: Folliott Pierpoint (1864)

For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies,
for the love which from our birth over and around us lies,

Refrain
Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night,
hill and vale, and tree and flow’r, sun and moon and stars of light, (Refrain)

For the joy of ear and eye, for the heart and mind’s delight,
for the mystic harmony linking sense to sound and sight, (Refrain)

For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child,
friends on earth and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, (Refrain)

For each perfect gift of thine to our race so freely giv’n,
graces human and divine, flow’rs of earth and buds of heav’n, (Refrain)

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture Reading: John 18:28–40

28 Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor's headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” 31 Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” 32 This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 33 So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” 37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth? After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. 39 But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 40 They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.

Hymn 308: Jesus Paid It All All To Christ

Text: Elvina M. Hall (1865)

I hear the Savior say, “Your strength indeed is small,
child of weakness, watch and pray, find in me your all in all.”

(Refrain)
Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;
sin had left a crimson stain, he washed it white as snow.

Lord, now indeed I find your power, and yours alone,
can change the leper’s spots, and melt the heart of stone. (Refrain)

For nothing good have I whereby thy grace to claim —
I’ll wash my garments white in the blood of Calv’ry’s lamb. (Refrain)

And when, before the throne, I stand in him complete,
“Jesus died my soul to save,” my lips shall still repeat. (Refrain)

Sermon Passage: Hosea 5:13–15, 6:1–6

13 When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah his wound, then Ephraim went to Assyria, and sent to the great king. But he is not able to cure you or heal your wound. 14 For I will be like a lion to Ephraim, and like a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will tear and go away; I will carry off, and no one shall rescue. 15 I will return again to my place, until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face, and in their distress earnestly seek me.
6:1–6 “Come, let us return to the Lord; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up. 2 After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him. 3 Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.” 4 What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away. 5 Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth, and my judgment goes forth as the light. 6 For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Hymn 672: Trust and Obey Trust And Obey Text: John Sammis (1887)

When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word, what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain
Trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies, but his smile quickly drives it away;
not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear, can abide while we trust and obey. (Refrain)

Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, but our toil he doth richly repay;
not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey. (Refrain)

But we never can prove the delights of his love until all on the altar we lay;
for the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows, are for them who will trust and obey. (Refrain)

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet, or we will walk by his side in the way;
what he says we will do, where he sends we will go, never fear, only trust and obey. (Refrain)

The Lord’s Supper

We will be observing the Lord's Supper at all worship services next Sunday, March 6.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism reminds us of the significance of the Lord’s Supper and the importance of preparing to come to the table:

Question 96: What is the Lord's Supper?
Answer: The Lord's Supper is a sacrament, wherein, by giving and receiving bread and wine, according to Christ's appointment, His death is showed forth; and the worthy receivers are, not after a corporeal and carnal manner, but by faith, made partakers of His body and blood, with all His benefits, to their spiritual nourishment, and growth in grace.

Question 97: What is required for the worthy receiving of the Lord's Supper?
Answer: It is required of them that would worthily partake of the Lord's Supper, that they examine themselves of their knowledge to discern the Lord's body, of their faith to feed upon Him, of their repentance, love, and new obedience; lest, coming unworthily, they eat and drink judgment to themselves.

Suggested scripture passages for preparation:

Luke 22:7-23, John 6:22-59, Ephesians 5:1-21, Hebrews 9:11-28
