Prelude: Sarabande from Suite No. 4 George Frideric Handel Colin Howland, piano

Call to Worship: Psalm 24:1–4

The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,
for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.
Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false
and does not swear deceitfully.

Doxology Lasst Uns Erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; alleluia, alleluia!
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Invocation

Hymn 101: Come, Thou Almighty King Trinity

text: anonymous (ca. 1757)

Come, thou Almighty King,
help us thy name to sing, help us to praise.
Father, all glorious, o'er all victorious,
come and reign over us, Ancient of Days.

Come, thou Incarnate Word,
gird on thy mighty sword, our prayer attend.
Come, and thy people bless, and give thy Word success;
Spirit of holiness, on us descend.

Come, Holy Comforter,
thy sacred witness bear in this glad hour.
Thou who almighty art, now rule in every heart,
and ne'er from us depart, Spirit of pow'r.

To the great One in Three
eternal praises be, hence evermore.
His sovereign majesty may we in glory see,
and to eternity love and adore.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture Reading: John 18:1–11

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” 9 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” 10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant[c] and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

his love shall never end. Alleluia! Amen!

Offertory: Jesus Paid It All arr. Stephen Nielson Colin Howland, piano

Sermon Passage: Galatians 6:11–18

11 See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. 12 It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. 14 But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. 16 And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. 17 From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.

Hymn 264: Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross Near the Cross

Text: Franny J. Crosby (1869)

Jesus, keep me near the cross; there a precious fountain,
free to all—a healing stream—flows from Calvary’s mountain.

Refrain

In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever;
till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul, love and mercy found me;

there the Bright and Morning Star shed its beams around me. (Refrain)

Near the cross, O Lamb of God, bring its scenes before me;
help me walk from day to day with its shadow o’er me.
(Refrain)

Near the cross I'll watch and wait, hoping, trusting ever,
till I reach the golden strand just beyond the river. (Refrain)

Benediction
