Hymn 111: This Is My Father’s World Terra Beata

Text: Franklin Sheppard (1915)

This is my Father’s world, and to my list’ning ears,
all nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought
of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; his hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world, the birds their carols raise,
the morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker’s praise.
This is my Father’s world: he shines in all that’s fair;
in the rustling grass I hear him pass, he speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father’s world, O let me ne’er forget
that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet.
This is my Father’s world: the battle is not done;
Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heav’n be one.

Prayer of Confession

O God, your Word is light to our feet and a light to our path. We confess that we have loved the darkness. We are fascinated by its intrigues, take fellowship with its members, and find there a place to hide our sin from others. Open our eyes, Lord. By your light let us see light. May your Spirit expose our sin, so we might be clothed in Christ’s righteousness, and truly live for your glory.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Titus 3:4–5

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.

Doxology 733 Lasst Uns Erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; alleluia, alleluia!
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Scripture Reading: Romans 8:18–27(pew Bible p. 944)

Hymn 691: It Is Well with My Soul Ville Du Havre Text: Horatio Spafford (1873)

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll;
whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
“It is well, it is well with my soul.”

Refrain
It is well with my soul; it is well, it is well with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control,
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
and has shed his own blood for my soul. (Refrain)

My sin– O the bliss of this glorious thought!–
my sin, not in part, but the whole,
is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more;
praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! (Refrain)

O Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
the clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend;
“Even so”– it is well with my soul. (Refrain)

Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 13

Question: Did our first parents continue in the estate wherein they were created?
Answer: Our first parents, being left to the freedom of their own will, fell from the estate wherein they were created, by sinning against God.

Hymn 700: Come, We That Love the Lord St. Thomas

Text: Isaac Watts (1707)

Come, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known;
join in a song with sweet accord, and thus surround the throne.

Let those refuse to sing that never knew our God;
but children of the heav’nly King may speak their joys abroad.

The men of grace have found glory begun below;
celestial fruits on earthly ground from faith and hope may grow.

The hill of Zion yields a thousand sacred sweets,
before we reach the heav’nly fields or walk the golden streets.

Then let our songs abound, and ev’ry tear be dry;
we’re marching through Immanuel’s ground to fairer worlds on high.

Benediction
