Hymn 168: I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art Toulon

Text: Strasbourg Psalter, 1545

I greet thee, who my sure Redeemer art, my only trust and Savior of my heart,
who pain didst undergo for my poor sake; I pray thee from our hearts all cares to take.

Thou art the King of mercy and of grace, reigning omnipotent in ev’ry place:
so come, O King, and our whole being sway; shine on us with the light of thy pure day.

Thou art the Life, by which alone we live, and all our substance and our strength receive;
O comfort us in death’s approaching hour, strong-hearted then to face it by thy pow’r.

Thou hast the true and perfect gentleness, no harshness hast thou and no bitterness:
make us to taste the sweet grace found in thee and ever stay in thy sweet unity.

Our hope is in no other save in thee; our faith is built upon thy promise free;
O grant to us such stronger hope and sure that we can boldly conquer and endure.

Prayer of Confession

O most great, most just and gracious God, you are of purer eyes than to behold iniquity. We confess that we have neglected and abused your holy worship; we have dishonored our superiors, and neglected our inferiors; we have dealt unjustly and uncharitably with our neighbors, not loving them as ourselves, nor doing to others as we would have them do to us. We have not sought first your kingdom and righteousness, nor been contented with our daily bread. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father. Be reconciled to us, and let the blood of Jesus Christ cleanse us from all our sins.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 1:13–14

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: John 11:1–26

1 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. 7 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” 17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Hymn: I Know that My Redeemer Lives Duke Street

Text: Samuel Medley (1776)

I know that my Redeemer lives!
What joy this blest assurance gives!
He lives, he lives, who once was dead;
he lives, my everliving head!

He lives triumphant from the grave;
he lives eternally to save;
he lives exalted, throned above;
he lives to rule his church in love.

He lives and grants me daily breath;
he lives, and I shall conquer death;
he lives, and while he lives, I’ll sing;
he lives, my Prophet, Priest, and King!

He lives, all glory to his name!
He lives, my Savior, still the same;
what joy this blest assurance gives:
I know that my Redeemer lives!

Hymn 528: My Faith Looks Up to Thee (stanzas 1–2) Olivet

Text: Ray Palmer (1830)

My faith looks up to thee,
thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior divine:
now hear my while I pray, take all my guilt away,
O let me from this day be wholly thine.

My thy rich grace impart
strength to my fainting heart, my zeal inspire;
as thou hast died for me, O may my love to thee
pure, warm, and changeless be, a living fire

Hymn 76: Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven Lauda Anima

text: Henry Lyte (1834)

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, to his feet your tribute bring;
ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who, like me, his praise should sing?
Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the everlasting King.

Praise him for his grace and favor to our fathers in distress;
praise him, still the same forever, slow to chide and swift to bless;
praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, glorious in his faithfulness.

Father-like, he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows;
in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes;
praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, widely as his mercy goes.

Frail as summer’s flow’r we flourish, blows the wind and it is gone;
but while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on.
Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the High Eternal One.

Angels, help us to adore him; you behold him face to face;
sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space,
praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise with us the God of grace.

Benediction
