Hymn 571: Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus Webb

Text: George Duffield (1858)

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross;
lift high his royal banner, it must not suffer loss:
from vict’ry unto vict’ry his army he shall lead,
till ev’ry foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the trumpet call obey;
forth to the mighty conflict in this his glorious day:
ye that are men now serve him against unnumbered foes;
let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in his strength alone;
the arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own:
put on the gospel armor, each piece put on with pray’r;
where duty calls, or danger, be never wanting there.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long;
this day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s song:
to him that overcometh a crown of life shall be;
he with the King of glory shall reign eternally.

Prayer of Confession

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. But You, O Lord, have mercy upon us. And grant, O most merciful Father, for Jesus’ sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous and joyful life, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 1:13–14

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: Romans 1:18–25

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

Hymn 562: All to Jesus I Surrender Surrender

Text: Judson VanDeVenter (1896)

All to Jesus I surrender, all to him I freely give;
may I ever love and trust him, in his presence daily live.

Refrain
I surrender all, I surrender all. All to thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all.

All to Jesus I surrender, humbly at his feet I bow,
worldly pleasures all forsaken, take me, Jesus, take me now. (Refrain)

All to Jesus I surrender, make me, Savior, wholly thine:
may thy Holy Spirit fill me, may I know thy pow’r divine. (Refrain)

All to Jesus I surrender, Lord, I give myself to thee;
fill me with thy love and power, let thy blessing fall on me. (Refrain)

Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 105

Question: What do we pray for in the fifth petition?
Answer: In the fifth petition, which is, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, we pray that God, for Christ’s sake, would freely pardon all our sins; which we are the rather encouraged to ask, because by his grace we are enabled from the heart to forgive others.

Distribution of the Elements

Bread

Scripture will be read while communion kits are distibuted, then all please join in singing:

Hymn 254: Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed (stanzas 1 & 2) Martyrdom

Alas! and did my Savior bleed, and did my Sovereign die!
Would he devote that sacred head for such a worm as I!

Was it for crimes that I had done he groaned upon the tree!
Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree!

(We will all partake the bread together at the direction of the minister.)

Cup

Scripture will be read, then all please join in singing:

Hymn 254: Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed (stanzas 3 & 5) Martyrdom

Well might the sun in darkness hide, and shut his glories in,
when Christ, the mighty Maker, died for man the creature’s sin.

But drops of grief can ne’er repay the debt of love I owe;
here, Lord, I give myself away, ‘tis all that I can do.

(We will all partake the cup together at the direction of the minister.)

Hymn 604: Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart Marion

Text: Edward Plumptre (1865)

Rejoice, ye pure in heart,
rejoice, give thanks, and sing:
your festal banner wave on high,
the cross of Christ your King.

Refrain
Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice, give thanks, and sing.

Bright youth and snow-crowned age,
strong men and maidens meek,
raise high your free, exulting song;
God’s wondrous praises speak. (Refrain)

With all the angel choirs,
with all the saints on earth,
pour out the strains of joy and bliss,
true rapture, noblest mirth! (Refrain)

Yes, on through life’s long path,
still chanting as ye go;
from youth to age, by night and day,
in gladness and in woe. (Refrain)

At last the march shall end,
the wearied ones shall rest;
the pilgrims find their Father’s house,
Jerusalem the blest. (Refrain)

Then on, ye pure in heart,
rejoice, give thanks, and sing;
your glorious banner wave on high,
the cross of Christ your King. (Refrain)
