Prelude: At the Feet of Jesus Florence Price

Priscilla Wortman, mezzo

At the feet of Jesus. Sorrow like the sea, Lord, let your mercy come driftin’ down on me. At the feet of Jesus, at your feet I stand, O my Savior Jesus, please reach out your hand.

Call to Worship

Invocation

Hymn 381: Brethren, We Have Met to Worship Holy Manna

William Moore (1825)

Brethren, we have met to worship and adore the Lord our God;
will you pray with all your power, while we try to preach the Word?
All is vain, unless the Spirit of the Holy One comes down;
brethren, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around.

Brethren, see poor sinners round you slumb’ring on the brink of woe;
death is coming, hell is moving—can you bear to let them go?
See our fathers and our mothers and our children sinking down;
brethren, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around.

Sisters, will you join and help us? Moses’ sister aided him;
will you help the trembling mourners who are struggling hard with sin?
Tell them all about the Savior—tell them that he will be found;
sisters, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around.

Let us love our God supremely, let us love each other too;
let us love and pray for sinners till our God makes all things new.
Then he’ll call us home to heaven, at his table we’ll sit down;
Christ will gird himself and serve us with sweet manna all around.

Prayer of Confession

Loving Father, you are the keeper of our souls. You hem us in behind and before, and there is no place we can flee from your presence. But Lord, we are so prone to wander. We go astray in our thinking and in our deeds. We follow our feelings rather than your Word. Pride takes priority over your precepts. Selfishness motivates instead of love. Legalism binds our conscience where grace should free us. By your Holy Spirit, remove the remaining shackles of sin. Enlighten our minds in the knowledge of Christ, that we might serve and enjoy you to the fullest every day. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Romans 8:1–2

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: Romans 1:1–7

1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Hymn 481: Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus Lemmel

Text: Helen Lemmel (1922)

O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There’s light for a look at the Savior,
and life more abundant and free!

Refrain
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
look full in his wonderful face,
and the things of earth will grow strangely dim
in the light of his glory and grace.

Through death into life everlasting
he passed, and we follow him there;
over us sin no more hath dominion-
for more than conqu’rors we are! (Refrain)

His Word shall not fail you– he promised;
believe him, and all will be well:
then go to a world that is dying,
his perfect salvation to tell! (Refrain)

Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 103

Question: What do we pray for in the third petition?
Answer: In the third petition, which is, thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven, we pray that God, by his grace, would make us able and willing to know, obey, and submit to his will in all things, as the angels do in heaven.

Offertory: Devotion John Ness Beck/arr. Craig Courtney

Priscilla Wortman, mezzo

I am thine, O Lord, I have heard thy voice, and it told thy love to me; but I long to rise in the arms of faith, and be closer drawn to thee. Consecrate me now to thy service, Lord, by the pow’r of grace divine; let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, and my will be lost in thine. Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where thou hast died; draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to thy precious bleeding side. Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart. Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart.

Hymn 92: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Ein Feste Burg

Text: Martin Luther (1529)

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
his craft and pow’r are great; and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he,
Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him.

That Word above all earthly pow’rs, no thanks to them, abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
the body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever.

Benediction
