Invocation

Hymn 57: Hallelujah, Praise Jehovah, O My Soul Ripley

Psalm 146, from The Psalter (1912)

Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days.
Put no confidence in princes, nor for help on man depend;
he shall die, to dust returning, and his purposes shall end.

Happy is the man that chooses Israel’s God to be his aid;
he is blessed whose hope of blessing on the Lord his God is stayed.
Heav’n and earth the Lord created, seas and all that they contain;
he delivers from oppression, righteousness he will maintain.

Food he daily gives the hungry, Sets the mourning prisoner free,
raises those bowed down with anguish, makes the sightless eye to see.
Well Jehovah loves the righteous, and the stranger he befriends,
helps the fatherless and widow, judgment on the wicked sends.

Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days.
Over all God reigns forever, through all ages he is King;
unto him, your God, O Zion, joyful hallelujahs sing.

Prayer of Confession

Righteous Father, we praise you that you keep us from all evil; there is nothing that can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus. But Lord, how often we run from you in our sin, and hide from you in our guilt, even as our first parents hid from you in the Garden! We admit we often cling to worldly wisdom more than your Word. We follow blind guides and are too easily deceived. We fail to see the offence in small sins, and before we know it, we have walked far away from you. Our love for you grows tepid, and our hearts become hard. O God, by your Holy Spirit turn our hearts to you again. Leave us not in our sin, but deliver us from the evil we pursue. Yoke us to Christ, so we may ever walk in your ways, for the sake of your glory, Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: 1 John 2:1–2

But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:50–58

50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Hymn 679: ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus Trust In Jesus

Text: Louisa Stead (1882)

‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take him at his word;
just to rest upon his promise; just to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”

Refrain
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more!

O how sweet to trust in Jesus, just to trust his cleansing blood;
just in simple faith to plunge me ‘neath the healing, cleansing flood! (Refrain)

Yes, ‘tis sweet to trust in Jesus, just from sin and self to cease;
just from Jesus simply taking life and rest, and joy and peace. (Refrain)

I’m so glad I learned to trust thee, precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
and I know that thou art with me, wilt be with me to the end. (Refrain)

Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 102

Question: What do we pray for in the second petition?
Answer: In the second petition, which is, Thy kingdom come, we pray that Satan’s kingdom may be destroyed; and that the kingdom of grace may be advanced, ourselves and others brought into it, and kept in it; and that the kingdom of glory may be hastened.

Offertory: Nearer, My God, to Thee Lewis Carey

Sharon Neff, soprano

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to thee, e’en tho’ it be a cross that raiseth me; still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee. Tho’ like the wanderer, the sun gone down, darkness be over me, my rest a stone. Yet, in my dreams, I’d be nearer, my God, to Thee. There let the way appear, steps unto heav’n; all that Thou sendest me in mercy giv’n: angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee. Or if on joyful wing, cleaving the sky, sun, moon, and stars forgot, upwards I fly, still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee, nearer to Thee.

Sermon: Wait For It Rev. Carroll Wynne

Hymn 310: Rejoice, the Lord Is King Darwall

Text: Charles Wesley (1746)

Rejoice, the Lord is King: your Lord and King adore!

Rejoice, give thanks, and sing, and triumph evermore.

(Refrain)

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

Jesus the Savior reigns, the God of truth and love;

when he had purged our stains, he took his seat above. (Refrain)

His kingdom cannot fail, he rules o’er earth and heav’n;

the keys of death and hell are to our Jesus giv’n. (Refrain)

He sits at God’s right hand till all his foes submit,

and bow to his command, and fall beneath his feet. (Refrain)

Rejoice in glorious hope! Our Lord, the Judge, shall come,

and take his servants up to their eternal home. (Refrain)

Benediction
