Call to Worship

Invocation

Hymn 119: I Sing the Almighty Power of God Forest Green

Text: Isaac Watts (1715)

I sing th’almighty pow’r of God that made the mountains rise,
that spread the flowing seas abroad, and built the lofty skies.
I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day;
the moon shines full at his command and all the stars obey.

I sing the goodness of the Lord that filled the earth with food;
he formed the creatures with his word, and then pronounced them good.
Lord, how your wonders are displayed where’er I turn mine eye,
if I survey the ground I tread or gaze upon the sky!

There’s not a plant or flow’r below but makes your glories known;
and clouds arise and tempests blow, by order from your throne;
while all that borrows life from you is ever in your care,
and everywhere that man can be, you, God, are present there.

Prayer of Confession

Holy God, your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. You sent your Son to restore us to your image, to reflect your character and live according to your Word. Lord, we confess that we strive against your will for us. We are so accustomed to satisfying our desires and looking out for our own interests that we do not hearken your leading and willfully transgress your commands. May your Spirit grant us the mind of Christ, whose food was to do your will. Turn our hearts to you, that we might love you with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 1:13–14

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 1:3-14

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

Hymn 159: O Savior, Precious Savior Meirionydd

Text: Frances Havergal (1870)

O Saviour, precious Saviour, whom yet unseen we love,
O Name of might and favor, all other names above;
we worship you, we bless you, to you alone we sing;
we praise you, and confess you our holy Lord and King.

O bringer of salvation, who wondrously have wrought,
yourself the revelation of love beyond our thought;
we worship you, we bless you, to you alone we sing;
we praise you, and confess you our gracious Lord and King.

In you all fulness dwelling, all grace and pow’r outpours;
the glory all-excelling, O Son of God, is yours;
we worship you, we bless you, to you alone we sing;
we praise you, and confess you our glorious Lord and King.

O grant the consummation of this our song above
in endless adoration, and everlasting love;
then shall we praise and bless you where perfect praises ring,
and evermore confess you our Savior and our King.

Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 101

Question: What do we pray for in the first petition?
Answer: In the first petition, which is, hallowed be thy name, we pray that God would enable us, and others, to glorify him in all that whereby he makes himself known; and that he would dispose all things to his own glory.

Communion Hymn 253: There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood (stanza 1) Fountain

There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel’s veins;
and sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains:
lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains;
and sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains.

Communion Hymn 253: There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood (stanza 3) Fountain

E’er since by faith I saw the stream your flowing wounds supply,
redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die:
and shall be till I die, and shall be till I die;
redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.

Proclamation of the Mystery of our Faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again!

Hymn 77: Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven Andrews

Text: Henry Lyte (1834)

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, to his feet your tribute bring;
ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who, like me, his praise should sing?
Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King.

Praise him for his grace and favor to our fathers in distress;
praise him, still the same forever, slow to chide and swift to bless;
Alleluia! Alleluia! Glorious in his faithfulness.

Father-like, he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows;
in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes;
Alleluia! Alleluia! Widely as his mercy goes.

Frail as summer’s flow’r we flourish, blows the wind and it is gone;
but while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the High Eternal One.

Angels, help us to adore him; you behold him face to face;
sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space,
Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace.
