Hymn 30: Our God, Our Help in Ages Past St. Anne Text: Isaac Watts (1719)

Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,

our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home:

Under the shadow of your throne your saints have dwelt secure;

sufficient is your arm alone, and our defense is sure.

Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame,

from everlasting you are God, to endless years the same.

A thousand ages in your sight are like an evening gone;

short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun.

The busy tribes of flesh and blood, with all their lives and cares,

are carried downward by your flood, and lost in foll'wing years.

Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its sons away;

they fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the op'ning day.

Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come:

O be our guard while troubles last, and our eternal home.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture Reading: John 7:37–52

37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as[a] the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. 40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So there was a division among the people over him. 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. 45 The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46 The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”
47 The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? 48 Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, 51 “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” 52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”

Hymn 685: My Jesus, As Thou Wilt! Jewett

Text: Benjamin Schmolck (1704)

My Jesus, as thou wilt! O may thy will be mine;

into thy hand of love I would my all resign.

Through sorrow, or through joy, conduct me as thine own;

and help me still to say, "My Lord, thy will be done."

My Jesus, as thou wilt! If needy here and poor,

give me thy people's bread, their portion rich and sure.

The manna of thy Word let my soul feed upon;

and if all else should fail, my Lord, thy will be done.

My Jesus, as thou wilt! Though seen through many a tear,

let not my star of hope grow dim or disappear.

Since thou on earth hast wept, and sorrowed oft alone,

if I must weep with thee, my Lord, thy will be done.

My Jesus, as thou wilt! All shall be well for me;

each changing future scene I gladly trust with thee.

Straight to my home above I travel calmly on,

and sing, in life or death, "My Lord, thy will be done."

Sermon Passage: Ephesians 5:22–6:9

22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. 5 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, 6 not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, 8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free. 9 Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him.

Hymn 688: Have Thine Own Way, Lord! Holy Desire Text: Adelaide A. Pollard (1890)

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Thou art the potter; I am the clay.

Mold me and make me after thy will,

while I am waiting, yielded and still.

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Search me and try me, Master, today!

Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now,

as in thy presence humbly I bow.

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Wounded and weary, help me, I pray!

Power, all power, surely is thine!

Touch me and heal me, Savior divine! (continued on next page)

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Hold o'er my being absolute sway!

Fill with thy Spirit till all shall see

Christ only, always, living in me!

Benediction
