Prelude: The Joy of the Redeemed Clarence Dickinson

Give we the glory and praise to the Lamb; take we the robe and the harp and the palm; sing we the song of the Lamb that was slain, dying in weakness, but rising to reign.

Call to Worship

Doxology Old Hundredth

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Almighty God, you have raised Jesus from death to life and crowned him Lord of all. We confess our tendency to supplant his authority; we want to control our lives, and constantly pursue the means to do so. We live anxiously, fearing we will not obtain what we most desire. We do not do to others as we would have them do to us, and our attempts to restore broken relationships are often feeble. Loving Father, through the blood of your Son reconcile us to yourself and to one another. Place our hope and confidence in our Great High Priest, who ever lives to make intercession for us.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Acts 4:11–12

This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

Invocation

Hymn 290: Hail the Day That Sees Him Rise Llanfair

text: Charles Wesley (1739)

Hail the day that sees him rise Alleluia! to his throne beyond the skies; Alleluia!
Christ, the Lamb for sinners giv'n, Alleluia! enters now the highest heav'n. Alleluia!

There for him high triumph waits; Alleluia! lift your heads, eternal gates, Alleluia!
he has conquered death and sin, Alleluia! take the King of glory in! Alleluia!

See, he lifts his hands above! Alleluia! See, he shows the prints of love! Alleluia!
Hark! his gracious lips bestow Alleluia! blessings on his church below. Alleluia!

Lord, beyond our mortal sight, Alleluia! raise our hearts to reach thy height; Alleluia!
there thy face unclouded see, Alleluia! find our heav'n of heav'ns in thee! Alleluia!

Responsive Reading: Psalm 135:13–21

Your name, O Lord, endures forever, your renown, O Lord, throughout all ages.
For the Lord will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants.
The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see;
they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths.
Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them.
O house of Israel, bless the Lord! O house of Aaron, bless the Lord!
O house of Levi, bless the Lord! You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!
Blessed be the Lord from Zion, he who dwells in Jerusalem! Praise the Lord!

Gloria Patri Meineke

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us and our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall

have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life; who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spake by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of Intercession (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Hymn 292: Who Shall Ascend the Mountain of the Lord Engelberg

Text: Edmund Clowney (1987)

(In the 11am service, Praisemakers, an interactive music program for ages 4-7, may go to the Catacombs.)

Who shall ascend the mountain of the Lord,
to search the mystery in heaven stored,
the knowledge of the Holy One adored? Alleluia!

One King alone, whose hands and heart are pure,
one Servant of the Lord with purpose sure,
can enter in that glory to endure. Alleluia!

He only can ascend to God's right hand
who first came down as his high mercy planned;
true God and man has earth and heaven spanned. Alleluia!

Before the clouds receive the King on high,
a cross lifts up his form against the sky;
the Framer of the worlds has come to die. Alleluia!

He shall ascend the mountain of the Lord,
the King of glory, whose own blood out-poured
paid that dear price that mercy did afford. Alleluia!

Scripture Reading: Revelation 7

1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree. 2 Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.” 4 And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel: 5 12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed, 12,000 from the tribe of Reuben, 12,000 from the tribe of Gad, 6 12,000 from the tribe of Asher, 12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali, 12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh, 7 12,000 from the tribe of Simeon, 12,000 from the tribe of Levi, 12,000 from the tribe of Issachar, 8 12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun, 12,000 from the tribe of Joseph, 12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed. 9  After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” 13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 “Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
