Invocation

Hymn 57: Hallelujah, Praise Jehovah, O My Soul Ripley

Psalm 146, from The Psalter (1912)

Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days.
Put no confidence in princes, nor for help on man depend;
he shall die, to dust returning, and his purposes shall end.

Happy is the man that chooses Israel’s God to be his aid;
he is blessed whose hope of blessing on the Lord his God is stayed.
Heav’n and earth the Lord created, seas and all that they contain;
he delivers from oppression, righteousness he will maintain.

Food he daily gives the hungry, Sets the mourning prisoner free,
raises those bowed down with anguish, makes the sightless eye to see.
Well Jehovah loves the righteous, and the stranger he befriends,
helps the fatherless and widow, judgment on the wicked sends.

Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days.
Over all God reigns forever, through all ages he is King;
unto him, your God, O Zion, joyful hallelujahs sing.

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, forgive us our great pride. We confess we elevate our wisdom above yours, glory in our own accomplishments, find security in our possessions, and promote our own righteousness. Like the rich young ruler, we think we are good, but have actually broken all of your commandments. In your mercy, reveal to us our sin, that we might turn to you for healing. By your Spirit make our boast in Jesus Christ and his accomplishments, in his cross and resurrection alone. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Isaiah 44:22

I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: Matthew 19:16–30

16 And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” 17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,
19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 20 The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” 26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 27 Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” 28 Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

Hymn 537: Take Time to Be Holy Holiness

Text: William Longstaff (1887)

(Students in grades 1–6 may go to the Catacombs for Tenth Children’s Music.)

Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord;
abide in him always, and feed on his Word.
Make friends of God’s children; help those who are weak;
forgetting in nothing his blessing to seek.

Take time to be holy, the world rushes on;
spend much time in secret with Jesus alone.
By looking to Jesus, like him thou shalt be;
thy friends in thy conduct his likeness shall see.

Take time to be holy, let him be thy guide,
and run not before him, whatever betide;
in joy or in sorrow, still follow thy Lord,
and, looking to Jesus, still trust in his Word.

Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul;
each thought and each motive beneath his control;
thus led by his Spirit to fountains of love,
thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.

Hymn 654: O Jesus, I Have Promised Angel’s Story

Text: John Bode (1868)

O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end;
be thou for ever near me, my Master and my Friend:
I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side,
nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.

O let me feel thee near me, the world is ever near;
I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear:
my foes are ever near me, around me and within;
but, Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee
that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be;
and, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end;
O give me grace to follow, my Master and my Friend.
