Call to Worship: Psalm 89:1–2

Invocation

Hymn 17: Praise the Lord: Ye Heavens Adore Him Faben

text: Based Psalm 145

Praise the Lord: ye heav'ns, adore him; praise him, angels, in the height;
sun and moon, rejoice before him; praise him all ye stars and light.
Praise the Lord, for he hath spoken; worlds his mighty voice obeyed:
laws which never shall be broken for their guidance hath he made.

Praise the Lord, for he is glorious; never shall his promise fail:
God hath made his saints victorious; sin and death shall not prevail.
Praise the God of our salvation; hosts on high, his pow'r proclaim;
heav'n and earth and all creation, laud and magnify his name.

Worship, honor, glory, blessing, Lord, we offer unto thee;
young and old, thy praise expressing, in glad homage bend the knee.
All the saints in heav'n adore thee; we would bow before thy throne:
as thine angels serve before thee, so on earth thy will be done.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture Reading: John 6:59–71

59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum. Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum. 60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” 66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” 71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

Hymn 571: Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus Webb

Text: George Duffield (1858)

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross;
lift high his royal banner, it must not suffer loss:
from vict'ry unto vict'ry his army he shall lead,
till ev'ry foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the trumpet call obey;
forth to the mighty conflict in this his glorious day:
ye that are men now serve him against unnumbered foes;
let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in his strength alone;
the arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own:
put on the gospel armor, each piece put on with pray'r;
where duty calls, or danger, be never wanting there.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long;
this day the noise of battle, the next the victor's song:
to him that overcometh a crown of life shall be;
he with the King of glory shall reign eternally.

Sermon Passage: Ephesians 5:1–21

1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. 5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” 15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Hymn 638: Savior, Thy Dying Love Thou Gavest Me Something For Jesus

Text: S. Dryden Phelps (1862)

Savior, thy dying love thou gavest me,
nor should I aught withhold, dear Lord, from thee:
in love my soul would bow, my heart fulfil its vow,
some off'ring bring thee now, something for thee.

O'er the blest mercy seat, pleading for me,
upward in faith I look, Jesus, to thee:
help me the cross to bear, thy wondrous love declare,
some song to raise, or prayer, something for thee.

Give me a faithful heart, guided by thee,
that each departing day henceforth may see
some work of love begun, some deed of kindness done,
some wand'rer sought and won, something for thee.

All that I am and have - thy gifts so free –
ever in joy or grief, my Lord, for thee;
and when thy face I see, my ransomed soul shall be,
through all eternity, offered to thee.

Benediction
