Invocation

Hymn 246: Man of Sorrows! What a Name Hallelujah! What a Savior

Text: Philip Bliss (1875)

Man of Sorrows! what a name for the Son of God, who came
ruined sinners to reclaim: Hallelujah! what a Savior!

Bearing shame and scoffing rude, in my place condemned he stood,
sealed my pardon with his blood: Hallelujah! what a Savior!

Guilty, vile, and helpless, we; spotless Lamb of God was he;
full atonement! can it be? Hallelujah! what a Savior!

Lifted up was he to die, “It is finished!” was his cry;
now in heav’n exalted high: Hallelujah! what a Savior!

When he comes, our glorious King, all his ransomed home to bring,
then anew this song we’ll sing: Hallelujah! what a Savior!

Prayer of Confession

Our God and Father, you see our deeds, but you also know every motive of our hearts. We confess that underneath our good works often lies a cold and stony heart. You have given us so much, yet we attempt to use your gifts without love. Forgive us for being secretly self-serving; for the times we manipulate our kindnesses to make ourselves look good. Forgive us for giving reluctantly, for not wanting to get our hands dirty, for not being willing to sacrifice. Help us to take up our cross daily, dying unto self, and living for Christ. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: 1 Peter 1:3

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: Revelation 3:8

8 I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

Hymn: You Came to Us, Dear Jesus Finlandia

Edmund Clowney (1985)

You came to us, dear Jesus, in our dying,
as broken, bleeding we could make no sign.
Compassion, Lord, brought you where we were lying,
to lift us up, to pour on oil and wine.
Compassion, Lord, brought you where we were lying,
to lift us up, to pour on oil and wine.

You came to us, dear Jesus, in our yearning,
as faint and famished we before you stood;
compassion, Lord, our emptiness discerning,
moved you to multiply the loaves for food.
compassion, Lord, our emptiness discerning,
moved you to multiply the loaves for food.

We come to you, dear Jesus, in your brothers
in prison, needy, hungry, sick, and cold;
compassion, Lord, sees you in all these others,
in touching them our Savior’s hand we hold.
compassion, Lord, sees you in all these others,
in touching them our Savior’s hand we hold.

You came to us, dear Jesus, in your dying;
your wounds poued love as blood upon the tree.
Compassion, Lord, from Calvary is crying,
“Bind up their wounds as you would do to me!”
Compassion, Lord, from Calvary is crying,
“Bind up their wounds as you would do to me!”

Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 85

Question: What does God require of us, that we may escape his wrath and curse, due to us for sin?
Answer: To escape the wrath and curse of God, due to us for sin, God requires of us faith in Jesus Christ, repentance unto life, with the diligent use of all the outward means whereby Christ communicates to us the benefits of redemption.

Hymn: Facing a Task Unfinished Aurelia

Text: Frank Houghton (1894-1972)

Facing a task unfinished that drives us to our knees,
a need that, undiminished, rebukes our slothful ease,
we who rejoice to know you renew before your throne
the solemn pledge we owe you to go and make you known.

Where other lords beside you hold their unhindered sway,
where forces that defied you defy you still today,
with none to heed their crying for life and love and light,
unnumbered souls are dying and pass into the night.

We bear the torch that flaming fell from the hands of those
who gave their lives proclaiming that Jesus died and rose;
ours is the same commission, the same glad message ours;
fired by the same ambition, to you we yield our pow’rs.

O Father, who sustained them, O Spirit, who inspired,
Savior, whose love constrained them to toil with zeal untired,
from cowardice defend us, from lethargy awake!
Forth on your errands send us to labor for your sake.

Benediction
