Call to Worship

Doxology Old Hundredth

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Heavenly Father, you are the God of mercy and grace. While we were your enemies, Christ died for us. Our hearts are filled with gratitude. Yet, O God, we confess our resistance to loving others as you have loved us. We instinctively distance ourselves from difficult people and hard situations. We view time and resources as our own possessions, rather than gifts from you we should share. Holy Spirit, open our eyes to the needs around us. Make us like Jesus, who came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for others. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Ephesians 2:4–5

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.

Invocation

Hymn 76: Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven Lauda Anima

text: Henry Lyte (1834)

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, to his feet your tribute bring;
ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who, like me, his praise should sing?
Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the everlasting King.

Praise him for his grace and favor to our fathers in distress;
praise him, still the same forever, slow to chide and swift to bless;
praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, glorious in his faithfulness.

Father-like, he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows;
in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes;
praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, widely as his mercy goes.

Frail as summer’s flow’r we flourish, blows the wind and it is gone;
but while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on.
Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the High Eternal One. (continued on next page)

Angels, help us to adore him; you behold him face to face;
sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space,
praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise with us the God of grace.

Responsive Reading: Psalm 131

O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.

Gloria Patri Meineke

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of Intercession (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Psalm 116:1–9 Toulon

(In the 11am service, Praisemakers, an interactive music program for ages 4-7, may go to the Catacombs.)

I love the Lord, for he has heard my voice;
he heard my pleas for mercy and for grace.
Since he inclined his ear to my request,
I’ll call on him as long as life shall last.

Anguish of death encompassed me about;
cords of the grave and terror held me down.
I was distressed. I called upon his name:
“Rescue my soul, O Lord my God, I pray.”

Righteous and gracious is the Lord our God,
rich in his mercy, tender in his love.
He will preserve the simple in their need;
when I was low, he came and rescued me. (continued on next page)

Rest, O my soul; the Lord has blessed you well,
for you, O Lord, from death redeemed my soul.
You dried my tears, my stumbling feet restored.
I’ll walk the land of life before the Lord.

Offertory: I Sing the Mighty Power of God arr. James Curnow

Nicaea Brass

Scripture Reading: Luke 10:25–37

10 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” 29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

Hymn 3: Give to Our God Immortal Praise Warrington

Text: Isaac Watts (1719)

Give to our God immortal praise;
mercy and truth are all his ways:
wonders of grace to God belong;
repeat his mercies in your song.

Give to the Lord of lords renown;
the King of kings with glory crown:
his mercies ever shall endure,
when lords and kings are known no more. (continued on next page)

He built the earth, he spread the sky,
and fixed the starry lights on high:
wonders of grace to God belong;
repeat his mercies in your song.

He fills the sun with morning light;
he bids the moon direct the night:
his mercies ever shall endure,
when suns and moons shall shine no more.

He sent his Son with pow'r to save
from guilt and darkness and the grave:
wonders of grace to God belong;
repeat his mercies in your song.

Through this vain world he guides our feet,
and leads us to his heav'nly seat:
his mercies ever shall endure,
when this vain world shall be no more.
