Hymn 164: O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing Azmon

Text: Charles Wesley (1739)

O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer’s praise,
the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace.

My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim,
to spread through all the earth abroad the honors of thy name.

Jesus, the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease;
‘tis music in the sinner’s ears, ‘tis life and health and peace.

He breaks the pow’r of reigning sin, he sets the pris’ner free;
his blood can make the foulest clean, his blood availed for me.

He speaks and, list’ning to his voice, new life the dead receive;
the mournful, broken hearts rejoice; the humble poor believe.

Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb, your loosen’d tongues employ;
ye blind, behold your Savior come; and leap, ye lame, for joy.

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, we lament how our sin brings shame to your Holy Name. Our lives demonstrate our true loyalties, betraying our devotion to lesser things. Forgive us for holding human reason above your Word, for fearing peer pressure more than your justice, for doing so many things apart from a view to your glory, for wasting the days you have given us in trivial things, for seeking pleasure above holiness. Lord, help us, and have mercy upon us. Help us seek your kingdom and righteousness, trusting you are sufficient to satisfy our deepest needs. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 1:13–14

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: Matthew 16:13–20

1 And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3 And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed. 5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 9 Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Hymn: O Church, Arise Getty/Townend

O church, arise, and put your armor on, hear the call of Christ our Captain;
for now the weak can say that they are strong in the strength that God has given.
With shield of faith and belt of truth we’ll stand against the devil’s lies;
an army bold, whose battle cry is Love, reaching out to those in darkness.

Our call to war: to love the captive soul, but to rage against the captor;
and with the sword that makes the wounded whole, we will fight with faith and valor.
When faced with trials on every side we know the outcome is secure,
and Christ will have the prize for which he died: an inheritance of nations.

Come see the cross, where love and mercy meet, as the Son of God is stricken,
then see his foes lie crushed beneath his feet, for the Conqueror has risen;
and as the stone is rolled away and Christ emerges from the grave,
this victory march continues till the day every eye and heart shall see him. (continued on next page)

So Spirit come, put strength in every stride, give grace for every hurdle,
that we may run with faith to win the prize of a servant good and faithful;
as saints of old still line the way, retelling triumphs of his grace,
we hear their calls, and hunger for the day when with Christ we stand in glory.

Question: What does God require of us, that we may escape his wrath and curse, due to us for sin?

Choral Meditation: Bread of the World in Mercy Broken Eucharistic Hymn

text: Reginald Heber (1827)

Bread of the world in mercy broken, wine of the soul in mercy shed, by whom the words of life wre spoken, and in whose death our sins are dead. Look on the heart by sorrow broken, look on the tears by sinners shed; and be thy feast to us the token that by thy grace our souls are fed.

Choral Meditation: How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds St. Peter

Text: John Newton (1779)

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear! It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, and drives away his fear. It makes the wounded spirit whole, and calms the troubled breast; ‘tis manna to the hungry soul, and to the weary rest.

Hymn 642: Be Thou My Vision Slane

Text: Irish Poem (ca. 8th century)

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that thou art —
thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
thou my great Father, I thy true son;
thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

Be thou my battle shield, sword for my fight;
be thou my dignity, thou my delight,
thou my soul’s shelter, thou my high tow’r;
raise thou me heav’n-ward, O Pow’r of my pow’r.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
thou mine inheritance, now and always:
thou and thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won,
may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heav’n’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Benediction
