Welcome and Preparation for Worship

Prelude: Variation 21: Canone alla Settima from Goldberg Variations Johann Sebastian Bach Bob Yang, piano

Call to Worship: Psalm 63:1–4

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.
So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.

Doxology Lasst Uns Erfreuen

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; alleluia, alleluia!
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Invocation

Hymn 12: Exalt the Lord, His Praise Proclaim Creation

text: The Psalter (1912)

Exalt the Lord, his praise proclaim; all ye his servants, praise his name,
who in the Lord's house ever stand and humbly serve at his command.
The Lord is good, his praise proclaim; since it is pleasant, praise his name;
his people for his own he takes and his own peculiar treasure makes.

I know the Lord is high in state, above all gods our Lord is great;
the Lord performs what he decrees, in heav'n and earth, in depths and seas.
He makes the vapors to ascend in clouds from earth's remotest end;
the lightnings flash at his command; he holds the tempest in his hand.

Exalt the Lord, his praise proclaim; all ye his servants, praise his name,
who in the Lord's house ever stand and humbly serve at his command.
Forever praise and bless his name, and in the church his praise proclaim;
in Zion is his dwelling place; praise ye the Lord, show forth his grace.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture Reading: John 5:16–30

16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” 18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. 19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. 30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.

Hymn 465: Marvelous Grace of Our Loving Lord Moody

text: Julia Johnston (1910)

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt,
yonder on Calvary's mount out-poured,
there where the blood of the Lamb was spilt.

Refrain
Grace, grace, God's grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
grace, grace, God's grace, grace that is greater than all our sin.

Sin and despair like the sea waves cold,
threaten the soul with infinite loss;
grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,
points to the Refuge, the mighty cross. (Refrain)

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide,
What can avail to wash it away?
Look! there is flowing a crimson tide;
Whiter than snow you may be today. (Refrain)

Sermon Passage: Ephesians 3:1–13

1 For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— 2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you, 3 how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. 4 When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. 6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 7 Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God's grace, which was given me by the working of his power. 8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, 10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him. 13 So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you, which is your glory.

Hymn: Christ Our Hope in Life and Death Christ Our Hope

text: Getty, Boswell, Kaulfin, Merker, Papa (2020)

What is our hope in life and death? Christ alone, Christ alone!
What is our only confidence? That our souls to him belong.
Who holds our days within his hand, what comes, apart from his command,
And what will keep us to the end? The love of Christ in which we stand.

Refrain
O sing hallelujah! Our hope springs eternal;
O sing hallelujah! Now and ever we confess: Christ our hope in life and death.

What truth can calm the troubled soul? God is good, God is good.
Where is his grace and goodness known? In our great Redeemer’s blood.
Who holds our faith when fears arise, who stands above the stormy trial,
Who sends the waves that bring us nigh unto the shore? The rock of Christ. (Refrain)

Unto the grave what shall we sing? Christ he lives, Christ he lives!
And what reward will heaven bring? Everlasting life with him.
There we will rise to meet the Lord, then sin and death will be destroyed,
And we will feast in endless joy, when Christ is ours forevermore. (Refrain)
