Hymn 165: Ye Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim Lyons

text: Charles Wesley (1744)

Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim,
and publish abroad his wonderful name;
the name, all victorious, of Jesus extol;
his kingdom is glorious and rules over all.

God ruleth on high, almighty to save;
and still he is nigh–his presence we have.
The great congregation his triumph shall sing,
ascribing salvation to Jesus, our King.

Salvation to God, who sits on the throne!
Let all cry aloud and honor the Son.
The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim,
fall down on their faces and worship the Lamb.

Then let us adore, and give him his right,
all glory and pow’r, and wisdom and might,
all honor and blessing, with angels above,
and thanks never ceasing for infinite love.

Prayer of Confession

Lord God, even as we come to you confessing our sins, we realize how often we neglect the duty of prayer. Our chief end is to glorify you, yet we allow our time to be consumed with frivolous things. We worry and fret rather than come to your throne of grace. We resort to our own wisdom and priorities instead of seeking your will. We argue and fight with those we differ, rather than seeking your face together. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Grant us grace to rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances, through Christ our Mediator, Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: John 3:16–17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: Jude 14–19

14 It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16 These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage. 17 But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit.

Hymn 518: Christ, of All My Hopes the Ground Hendon

Text: Ralph Wardlaw (1817)

Christ, of all my hopes the ground,
Christ, the spring of all my joy,
still in you may I be found,
still for you my pow’rs employ,
still for you my pow’rs employ.

Let your love my heart inflame;
keep your fear before my sight;
be your praise my highest aim;
be your smile my chief delight,
be your smile my chief delight.

Fountain of o’erflowing grace,
freely from your fullness give;
till I close my earthly race,
may I prove it “Christ to live,”
may I prove it “Christ to live.”

Firmly trusting in your blood,
nothing shall my heart confound;
safely I shall pass the flood,
safely reach Immanuel’s ground,
safely reach Immanuel’s ground.

Thus, O thus, an entrance give
to the land of cloudless sky;
having known it “Christ to live,”
let me know it “gain to die,”
let me know it “gain to die.”

Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 83

Question: Are all transgressions of the law equally heinous?
Answer: Some sins in themselves, and by reason of several aggravations, are more heinous in the sight of God than others.

Offertory: Gracious Spirit, Dwell with Me arr. K. Lee Scott

Chamber Choir

Gracious Spirit, dwell with me, I would gracious be; help me now thy grace to see, I would be like thee; and, with words that help and heal, thy life would mine reveal; and, with actions bold and meek, for Christ, my Savior, speak. Truthful Spirit, dwell with me, I would truthful be; help me now thy truth to see, I would be like thee; and, with wisdom kind and clear, thy life in mine appear; and, with actions brotherly, speak Christ’s sincerity. Holy Spirit, dwell with me, I would holy be; show thy mercy tenderly, make me more like thee; separate from sin, I would and cherish all things good, and whatever I can be give him who gave me thee. Mighty Spirit, dwell with me, I would mighty be; help me now thy pow’r to see, I would be like thee; ‘gainst all weapons hell can wield, be thou my strength and shield; let thy word my weapon be, Lord, thine the victory.

Hymn 457: Come, Thou Fount of Blessing Nettleton

Text: Robert Robinson (1758)

Come, thou fount of ev’ry blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above;
praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of God’s unchanging love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I’m come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand’ring from the fold of God:
he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be;
let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wand’ring heart to thee.
Prone to wander – Lord, I feel it – prone to leave the God I love;
here’s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

Benediction
