Prelude: Contemplation on Tallis' Canon Richard Purvis

Call to Worship

Doxology Old Hundredth

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we bow before you, confessing our sin and wickedness. It is in our very nature to sin. We are subject to temptations every day, and are drawn to them by our own unholy desires. We cannot separate our actions from who we are. We are guilty before you, and worthy of condemnation. Righteous Father, we appeal to your mercies offered in the gospel of Jesus Christ. We praise you for his blood, which covers our iniquity, and atones for our sin. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Romans 5:8–9

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

Invocation

Hymn 263: Lift High the Cross Crucifer

Refrain
Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim,
till all the world adore his sacred name.

Come, brethren, follow where our Savior trod,
our King victorious, Christ, the Son of God. (Refrain)

Led on their way by this triumphant sign,
the hosts of God in conqu’ring ranks combine. (Refrain)

O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree,
as thou hast promised, draw men unto thee. (Refrain)

Thy kingdom come, that earth’s despair may cease
beneath the shadow of its healing peace. (Refrain)

For thy blest cross which doth for us atone,
creation’s praises rise before thy throne. (Refrain)

Responsive Reading: Psalm 123

To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!
Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us.
Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.
Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.

Gloria Patri Meineke

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of Intercession (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Psalm 63 Hamburg

O God, you are my God alone; with eagerness I seek your face.
My soul and body thirst for you, as in a dry and weary place.

I've seen you in your holy place; your pow'r and glory held my gaze.
Your love is better far than life, and thus my lips will sing your praise.

I bless you, Lord, throughout my life and raise my hands to you in prayer.
My joyful lips will sing your praise; my soul is fed with richest fare.

I lie awake upon my bed, rememb'ring you before it's light;
on you, my God, I meditate, throughout the watches of the night.

For you have been my help, O God; I sing for joy beneath your wings.
Your right hand holds and strengthens me; to you my soul for safety clings.

Scripture Reading: Revelation 2:8–11

8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life. 9 “‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’”

Sermon: Under the Cross Dr. Liam Goligher

Hymn 402: Abide with Me, Fast Falls the Eventide Eventide

Abide with me: fast falls the eventide:
the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide:
when other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
change and decay in all around I see;
O thou who changest not, abide with me.

I need thy presence every passing hour;
what but thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
Who like thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.

I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless:
ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death’s sting? where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if thou abide with me.

Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes:
shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies:
heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee:
in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
