Prelude: O Thou that Tellest Good Tidings to Zion, from Messiah George Frideric Handel

Call to Worship

Doxology Old Hundredth

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Our God and Father, your mercies are new every morning; great is your faithfulness! We confess our daily need of your grace. Our sin clings so closely that we can hardly do anything from a pure heart. We need your Holy Spirit to sanctify us by your Word and keep us from temptation and evil. Grant us the assurance that we are no longer slaves to sin, but in Christ we are new creations. Lord, have mercy upon us, for the sake of your dear Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Galatians 4:4–5

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

Invocation

Hymn 302: Come, Christians, Join to Sing Madrid

Come, Christians, join to sing Alleluia! Amen!
loud praise to Christ our King; Alleluia! Amen!
let all, with heart and voice, before his throne rejoice;
praise is his gracious choice. Alleluia! Amen!

Come, lift your hearts on high, Alleluia! Amen!
let praises fill the sky; Alleluia! Amen!
he is our Guide and Friend; to us he’ll condescend;
his love shall never end. Alleluia! Amen!

Praise yet our Christ again, Alleluia! Amen!
life shall not end the strain; Alleluia! Amen!
on heaven’s blissful shore, his goodness we’ll adore,
singing forevermore, “Alleluia! Amen!”

Responsive Reading: Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.

Gloria Patri Meineke

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of Intercession (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Psalm 28 Tallis' Canon

To you, O Lord, I cry; my Rock, do not be deaf to my lament.
If you are silent I become like those that to the pit descend.

Receive my plea for mercy, Lord, as now I call to you for grace;
I lift my hands to you in prayer and look to your most holy place.

Blest be the Lord, for he has heard the plea for mercy which I made;
The Lord God is my strength and shield, I trust in him who sends me aid.

My heart uplifted leaps for joy; my thanks to him I gladly sing.
The Lord God is his people's strength, a saving fortress for his king.

Scripture Reading: Revelation 2:1–7

1 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands. 2 “‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. 3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. 6 Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

Proclamation of the Mystery of our Faith: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again!

Hymn 521: My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less Solid Rock

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

Refrain
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace;
in every high and stormy gale my anchor holds within the veil. (Refrain)

His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood;
when all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay. (Refrain)

When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found;
dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. (Refrain)

Benediction
