Prelude: Prelude from Symphony 1 Louis Vierne

Call to Worship

Invocation

Hymn 382: God Himself Is with Us Wunderbarer König

God himself is with us: let us now adore him, and with awe appear before him.
God is in his temple - all within keep silence, prostrate lie with deepest rev’rence.
Him alone God we own, him, our God and Savior; praise his name forever.

God himself is with us: hear the harps resounding! See the crowds the throne surrounding!
“Holy, holy, holy” - hear the hymn ascending, angels, saints, their voices blending!
Bow thine ear to us here: hear, O Christ, the praises that thy church now raises.

O thou fount of blessing, purify my spirit; trusting only in thy merit,
like the holy angels who behold thy glory, may I ceaselessly adore thee,
and in all, great and small, seek to do most nearly what thou lovest dearly.

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, we pray your Holy Spirit would impress us deeply with the severity of our sin. Our senses have become dull to sin’s effects, and our hearts seldom feel the weight of our transgressions. We confess the pleasure we often find in sinning; it allures and attracts us, promising satisfaction or reward. Father, take away our love of sinning! Expose the lies which tempt us, and keep us from the evil one. Draw us to yourself in Christ, that we might walk in righteousness and truth all our days. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: Matthew 13:44–58

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.” 53 And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there, 54 and coming to his hometown he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” 58 And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.

Hymn 645: Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee St. Agnes

Jesus, the very thought of thee with sweetness fills my breast;
but sweeter far thy face to see, and in thy presence rest.

Nor voice can sing, nor heart can frame, nor can the mem’ry find,
a sweeter sound than thy blest name, O Savior of mankind.

O Hope of ev’ry contrite heart, O Joy of all the meek,
to those who fall, how kind thou art! How good to those who seek!

But what to those who find? Ah, this nor tongue nor pen can show:
the love of Jesus, what it is none but his loved ones know.

Jesus, our only joy be thou, as thou our prize wilt be;
Jesus, be thou our glory now, and through eternity.

Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 26

Question: How does Christ execute the office of a king?
Answer: Christ executes the office of a king, in subduing us unto himself, in ruling and defending us, and in restraining and conquering all his and our enemies.

Offertory: Be Calm and Peaceful J.S. Bach/arr. George Kemmer

Chamber Choir

Be calm and peaceful and trust in God, on his bounteous love relying. In him true peace abides, without him vain is striving. He is our Friend and Guide, our Savior, who leads to life eternal. In him is true peace. He knows our needs and will comfort us when we ask his guidance. Trust, and no ills o’erwhelm thee: always in his love believing. He is our hope, our strength, life giver, who leads us on to the perfect life. In him is true peace.

Sermon: True Treasure Mr. Jared Cochrum

Hymn 648: My Jesus, I Love Thee Caritas

My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine;
for thee all the follies of sin I resign.
My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou;
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.

I love thee because thou hast first loved me,
and purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree.
I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow;
if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.

I’ll love thee in life, I will love thee in death;
and praise thee as long as thou lendest me breath;
and say, when the death-dew lies cold on my brow:
if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.

In mansions of glory and endless delight,
I’ll ever adore thee in heaven so bright;
I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow:
if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.

Benediction
