Prelude: Jesus Christ, Our Savior, Who Turned God’s Wrath Away from Us Johann Sebastian Bach

Call to Worship

Invocation

Hymn 165: Ye Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim Lyons

Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim,
and publish abroad his wonderful name;
the name, all victorious, of Jesus extol;
his kingdom is glorious and rules over all.

God ruleth on high, almighty to save;
and still he is nigh–his presence we have.
The great congregation his triumph shall sing,
ascribing salvation to Jesus, our King.

Salvation to God, who sits on the throne!
Let all cry aloud and honor the Son.
The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim,
fall down on their faces and worship the Lamb.

Then let us adore, and give him his right,
all glory and pow’r, and wisdom and might,
all honor and blessing, with angels above,
and thanks never ceasing for infinite love.

Prayer of Confession

O Lord, you are great and greatly to be praised! Forgive us for failing to glorify you as we ought: for half-hearted devotion, for speaking your name lightly, in establishing competing priorities, by allowing our sinful affections to dominate our thoughts, by not loving our neighbor as ourselves. Holy Father, please forgive our trespasses and grant us the renewing grace of your Holy Spirit, through Christ our Savior we pray. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Titus 3:4–7

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 17:1–16

1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” 2 And the word of the Lord came to him: 3 “Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 4 You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” 5 So he went and did according to the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan. 6 And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. 7 And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land. 8 Then the word of the Lord came to him, 9 “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.” 11 And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12 And she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.” 13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’” 15 And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.

Sermon: Waiting in a Wadi Rev. John

Hymn 427: Amidst Us Our Beloved Stands Hamburg

Amidst us our Beloved stands, and bids us view his pierced hands;
points to the wounded feet and side, blest emblems of the Crucified.

What food luxurious loads the board, when athis table sits the Lord!
The wine how rich, the bread how sweet, when Jesus deigns the guests to meet!

If now, with eyes defiled and dim, we see the signs, but see not him;
O may his love the scales displace, and bid us see him face to face!

O glorious Bridegroom of our hearts, your present smile a heav’n imparts!
O lift the veil, if veil there be, let every saint your glory see!

Chamber Choir

(Sung in Latin) Hail, true Body, born of the virgin Mary, who having truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for mankind, whose pierced side flowed with water and blood: May it be for us a foretaste (of the heavenly banquet) in the trial of death.

Question of Preparation: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 25

Question: How does Christ execute the office of a priest?
Answer: Christ executes the office of a priest, in his once offering up of himself a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice, and reconcile us to God, and in making continual intercession for us.

Proclamation of the Mystery of our Faith: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again!

Hymn 86: The Lord’s My Shepherd, I’ll Not Want Brother James’ Air

The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want; he makes me down to lie
in pastures green; he leadeth me the quiet waters by.
He leadeth me, he leadeth me the quiet waters by.

My soul he doth restore again; and me to walk doth make
within the paths of righteousness, e’en for his own name’s sake;
within the paths of righteousness, e’en for his own name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale, yet will I fear none ill,
for thou art with me; and thy rod and staff me comfort still;
for thou art with me, and thy rod and staff me comfort still.

My table thou hast furnished in presence of my foes;
my head thou dost with oil anoint, and my cup overflows.
my head thou dost with oil anoint, and my cup overflows.

Goodness and mercy all my life shall surely follow me:
and in God’s house forevermore my dwelling place shall be;
and in God’s house forever my dwelling place shall be.

Benediction
