All Men Are Mortal Johann Sebastian Bach

Call to Worship

Invocation

Hymn 57: Hallelujah, Praise Jehovah, O My Soul Ripley

Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days.
Put no confidence in princes, nor for help on man depend;
he shall die, to dust returning, and his purposes shall end.

Happy is the man that chooses Israel’s God to be his aid;
he is blessed whose hope of blessing on the Lord his God is stayed.
Heav’n and earth the Lord created, seas and all that they contain;
he delivers from oppression, righteousness he will maintain.

Food he daily gives the hungry, Sets the mourning prisoner free,
raises those bowed down with anguish, makes the sightless eye to see.
Well Jehovah loves the righteous, and the stranger he befriends,
helps the fatherless and widow, judgment on the wicked sends.

Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days.
Over all God reigns forever, through all ages he is King;
unto him, your God, O Zion, joyful hallelujahs sing.

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, we pray your Holy Spirit would impress us deeply with the severity of our sin. Our senses have become dull to sin’s effects, and our hearts seldom feel the weight of our transgressions. We confess the pleasure we often find in sinning; it allures and attracts us, promising satisfaction or reward. Father, take away our love of sinning! Expose the lies which tempt us, and keep us from the evil one. Draw us to yourself in Christ, that we might walk in righteousness and truth all our days. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Psalm 130:7–8

O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: Matthew 9:9–17

9 As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. 10 And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” 14 Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. 17 Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”

Hymn 700: Come, We That Love the Lord St. Thomas

Come, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known;
join in a song with sweet accord, and thus surround the throne.

Let those refuse to sing that never knew our God;
but children of the heav’nly King may speak their joys abroad.

The men of grace have found glory begun below;
celestial fruits on earthly ground from faith and hope may grow.

The hill of Zion yields a thousand sacred sweets,
before we reach the heav’nly fields or walk the golden streets.

Then let our songs abound, and ev’ry tear be dry;
we’re marching through Immanuel’s ground to fairer worlds on high.

Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 13

Question: Did our first parents continue in the estate wherein they were created?
Answer: Our first parents, being left to the freedom of their own will, fell from the estate wherein they were created, by sinning against God.

Offertory: Sonata VI: Adagio Felix Mendelssohn

Colin Howland, organ

Sermon: Christ’s Dinner Club Rev. Gavin Lymberopoulos

Hymn 521: My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less Solid Rock

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

(Refrain)
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace;
in every high and stormy gale my anchor holds within the veil. (Refrain)

His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood;
when all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay. (Refrain)

When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found;
dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. (Refrain)

Benediction
