Invocation

Hymn 38: Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise St. Denio

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all praise we would render; O help us to see
‘tis only the splendor of light hideth thee!

Prayer of Confession

Righteous Father, we come before you with an immediate sense of our unworthiness, of our misery and sin. You are pure and holy and just; we are wayward, willful, and disobedient. We are motivated far too often by love of self, rather than of love for you and our neighbor. Teach us to seek your righteousness rather than self-righteousness. By your Spirit put to death in us those things which cause us to sin, for the sake of your glory, and the good of others around us. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 2:13–14

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:13–29

13 Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. 15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
21 Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” 28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Hymn 141: God, in the Gospel of His Son Germany

God, in the gospel of his Son, makes his eternal counsels known;
where love in all its glory shines, and truth is drawn in fairest lines.

Here sinners of a humble frame may taste his grace, and learn his name;
may read, in characters of blood, the wisdom, pow’r, and grace of God.

The pris’ner here may break his chains; the weary rest from all his pains;
the captive feel his bondage cease; the mourner find the way of peace.

Here faith reveals to mortal eyes a brighter world beyond the skies;
here shines the light which guides our way from earth to realms of endless day.

O grant us grace, almighty Lord, to read and mark your holy Word;
its truths with meekness to receive, and by its holy precepts live.

Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 10

Question: How did God create man?
Answer: God created man male and female, after his own image, in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness, with dominion over the creatures.

Offering Prayer

Offertory: Jesus, I Am Resting arr. Edwin Childs

Sermon: On That Day Rev. Gavin Lymberopoulos

Hymn 575: Soldiers of Christ, Arise Diademata

Soldiers of Christ, arise, and put your armor on,
strong in the strength which God supplies through his eternal Son.
Strong in the Lord of Hosts, and in his mighty pow’r,
who in the strength of Jesus trusts is more than conqueror.

Stand then in his great might, with all his strength endued;
but take, to arm you for the fight, the panoply of God.
Leave no unguarded place, no weakness of the soul;
take ev’ry virtue, ev’ry grace, and fortify the whole.

To keep your armor bright, attend with constant care;
still walking in your Captain’s sight, and watching unto prayer.
From strength to strength go on; wrestle and fight and pray;
tread all the pow’rs of darkness down, and win the well-fought day.

Benediction
