Call to Worship

Invocation

Hymn 179: Hallelujah! Thine the Glory Thine the Glory

We praise thee, O God! for the days of our youth,
for the bright lamp that shineth — the Word of thy truth.

(Refrain)
Hallelujah! thine the glory, hallelujah! we sing;
hallelujah! thine the glory, our praise now we bring.

We praise thee, O God! for the Son of thy love,
for Jesus who died and is now gone above. (Refrain)

We praise thee, O God! for thy Spirit of light,
who has shown us our Savior and scattered our night. (Refrain)

All glory and praise to the Lamb that was slain,
who has borne all our sins and has cleansed ev’ry stain! (Refrain)

Prayer of Confession

Almighty God, we confess our lives abound in sinful desires and transgressions of your holy law. Our consciences testify we are guilty before you and worthy of your just judgment. Merciful Father, grant that we may so embrace your infinite mercy that we may not doubt your wrath will be turned from us, and yet not abuse this privilege by taking liberty to sin. Help us in true humility to daily flee to your mercy, that we may be sustained and kept in safety until that day when we come to that eternal inheritance that has been obtained for us by the blood of your only begotten Son. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: 1 John 1:8–9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Doxology Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:1–12

1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. 6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you. 7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Hymn 644: May the Mind of Christ My Savior St. Leonards

May the mind of Christ my Savior live in me from day to day,
by his love and pow’r controlling all I do and say.

May the Word of God dwell richly in my heart from hour to hour,
so that all may see I triumph only through his pow’r.

May the peace of God my Father rule my life in everything,
that I may be calm to comfort sick and sorrowing.

May the love of Jesus fill me as the waters fill the sea;
him exalting, self abasing, this is victory.

May his beauty rest upon me as I seek the lost to win,
and may they forget the channel, seeing only him.

Confession of Faith: Westminster Shorter Catechism, question 9

Question: What is the work of creation?
Answer: The work of creation is, God’s making all things of nothing, by the word of his power, in the space of six days, and all very good.

Offering Prayer

Offertory: Larghetto George Frideric Handel

Thomas Jackson, violin

Sermon: The Golden Rule Rev. Gavin Lymberopoulos

Hymn: One There Is Above All Others Neander

One there is, above all others, well deserves the name of Friend;
his is love beyond a brother’s, costly, free, and knows no end.
They who once his kindness prove find it everlasting love.

Which of all our friends, to save us, could or would have shed his blood?
But our Jesus died to have us reconciled in him to God.
This was boundless love indeed; Jesus is a Friend in need.

When he lived on earth abased, “Friend of sinners” was his name;
Now above all glory raised, he rejoices in the same;
still he calls them brethren, friends, and to all their wants attends.

Could we bear from one another what he daily bears from us?
Yet this glorious Friend and Brother loves us though we treat him thus:
though for good we render ill, he accounts us brethren still.

O for grace our hearts to soften! Teach us, Lord, at length to love,
we, alas! forget too often what a Friend we have above:
but when home our souls are brought, we will love you as we ought.

Benediction
