Only Trusting in My Savior Richard Nichols
Only trusting in my Savior, O all to him my soul would leave; he has suffered to redeem me, and his word I now believe. Now to Christ alone I’m clinging, tho’ the tempest round me blow; heeding not the clouds above me, dreading not the waves below. Only trusting, nothing doubting, O this is all that I can do; ev’ry trial that befalls me he will safely bring me through. There are breakers in the distance, and yet no danger will I fear; on the Rock my feet are resting, naught of harm can reach me here. Only trusting, only trusting, this is joy and life to me; thou wilt never, ever leave me while I cling to thee. Only trusting.

Invocation
Hymn 21: Sing Praise to the Lord! Laudate Dominum
Prayer of Confession
O Lord, you are slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Thank you for your patience with us, your wayward and disobedient children. Even with our best intentions, sin continues to creep in. Our sinful desires and affections affect all we do. We lament how our actions profane your holy name. We grieve that we fail to love our neighbor as ourselves. Help us, Lord, and spare us. Grant us the blessing of those who are poor in spirit, that we might seek first your kingdom and righteousness. Amen.
The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: 2 Peter 1:3–4
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
Doxology (Trinity Hymnal 732) Tallis’ Canon
Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Prayer of Illumination (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Question of Preparation (from the Heidelberg Catechism, 31; congregation reads answer in unison)
Question: Why is Jesus called “Christ,” meaning “anointed”?
Answer: Because he has been ordained by God the Father and has been anointed with the Holy Spirit to be our chief prophet and teacher who perfectly reveals to us the secret counsel and will of God for our deliverance; our only high priest who has set us free by the one sacrifice of his body, and who continually pleads our cause with the Father; and our eternal king who governs us by his Word and Spirit, and who guards us and keeps us in the freedom he has won for us.
