Prayer of Confession

Holy Lord, we are not fit to come before you. We have no righteousness of our own to offer and we possess nothing to sacrifice that is worthy of the great debt that we owe you. We have not done what is just and right, but instead have frequently sinned in our words and our actions. We have not loved kindness and delighted our souls in doing others good. We have not walked humbly and wisely before you, but have walked in our own wisdom and followed the counsel of the world around us. Father, forgive us. Holy Spirit, take away our stony hearts and create in us true goodness and beauty. Give us grace to walk in your statutes out of the thankfulness for the rich salvation we have in Christ our Lord. Amen.

Question: Can they who have never heard of the gospel, and so know not Jesus Christ, nor believe in him, be saved by their living according to the light of nature?
Answer: They who, having never heard the gospel, know not Jesus Christ, and believe not in him, cannot be saved, be they never so diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, or the laws of that religion which they profess; neither is there salvation in any other, but in Christ alone, who is the Savior only of his body the Church.
