Soli Deo Gloria Timothy Renner, baritone

Ich habe Genug, BWV 82 (Sung in German) Johann Sebastian Bach

I. Aria: It is enough. I have held the Savior, the hope of all peoples, in the warm embrace of my

arms. It is enough. I have seen him, my faith has impressed Jesus on my heart; now I wish this very day to depart from here with joy.

II. Recitative: It is enough. My one consolation is this: that I am Jesus’ beloved and he is mine. In

faith, I hold him. For in Simeon, I already see the joy of life to come. Let us go forth with Simeon! Ah! if only the Lord would free me from my body’s enslavement; ah! if indeed my liberation were soon, with joy I would say to you, O world, it is enough.

III. Aria: Slumber, my weary eyes, fall softly and close in contentment. O world, I will linger here no

more. For indeed, I find nothing in you pleasing to my soul. Here I am resigned to misery, but there, there I shall feel sweet peace and quiet rest.

Hymn 176: Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus! In Babilone

Prayer of Confession

O God, we praise you that your promises never fail, that your faithfulness endures to all generations. Lord, we lament that we are so easily swayed by the temptations of this world, by the desires of our own flesh, by the vain wanderings of our minds. Forgive us when we do not seek first your kingdom and your righteousness, for seeking to build our own dynasties, for the ways our selfish ambitions hurt the lives of others. Father, have mercy upon us, for the sake of our Savior Jesus, who came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for sinners like us. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 2:13–14

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Doxology (Trinity Hymnal 732) Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;

Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Prayer of Illumination (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Offering Prayer

Offertory: O How Amiable Ralph Vaughan Williams

O how amiable are thy dwellings, thou Lord of hosts! My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young, even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house, they will be alway praising thee. The glorious majesty of the Lord our God be upon us, prosper thou the work of our hands upon us. O prosper thou our handiwork.

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home.
