Prelude: The Publican Beardsley van de Water
Steven Condy, baritone

Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and pray'd thus within himself, "God, I thank Thee, that I am not as other men, extortioners, unjust, or even as this publican; I fast twice in the week, I give tithe of all that I possess." And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heav'n, but smote upon his breast, saying, "God be merciful unto me, a sinner." I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other; for he that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. "God be merciful unto me."

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (Trinity Hymnal 457) arr. Richard Walters

Call to Worship

Doxology Old Hundredth

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

O God, who are of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, but who despises not the sorrow of the contrite, have mercy upon us, according to your lovingkindness. You alone know how often we have sinned: in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. O searcher of hearts, help us to acknowledge with deep sorrow the multitude of our transgressions. In your mercy, bring these things to our remembrance, and do not allow us to continue in them without correction. Cleanse us from all iniquity, and let your mercy bring us healing, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Romans 5:1

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Invocation

Hymn 660: O God Beyond All Praising Thaxted

Responsive Reading: Psalm 119:65–80 (pew Bible p. 513)

Gloria Patri Meineke

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the
communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of Intercession (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Offertory: O Love Divine Deborah Govenor
Robin Massie Condy, soprano/Steven Condy, baritone

O Love divine, what have you done! Th'incarnate God has died for me! The Father's co-eternal Son bore my sins upon the tree! The Son of God for me has died: My Lord, my Love, is crucified for me and you, to bring us near to God; believe the record true, we all are bought with His blood; pardon for all flows from His side. My Lord, my Love, is crucified. Behold Him, that pass by, the bleeding Prince of life and peace. Come, sinners, see your Savior die, and say, was ever grief like His? Come, feel with me His blood applied. My Lord, my Love, is crucified.
