Prelude: Bleed Thou Must, Beloved Heart from St. Matthew’s Passion Johann Sebastian Bach

Suzannah Waddington, soprano

Bleed thou must, beloved heart! Ah, a child whom Thou didst nourish, at Thy bosom fondly cherish, foully plots by craft to slay Thee, like a very snake betray Thee.

Call to Worship

Doxology (Trinity Hymnal 731) Old Hundredth

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Almighty God, we confess our lives abound in sinful desires and transgressions of Your holy law. Our consciences testify we are guilty before You and worthy of Your just judgment. Merciful Father, grant that we may so embrace Your infinite mercy that we may not doubt Your wrath will be turned from us, and yet not abuse this privilege by taking liberty to sin. Help us in true humility to daily flee to Your mercy, that we may be sustained and kept in safety until that day when we come to that eternal inheritance that has been obtained for us by the blood of Your only begotten Son. Amen.

Words of Assurance and Invocation

Hymn 253: There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood Fountain

Responsive Reading: Isaiah 51:1723

Wake yourself, wake yourself, stand up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup of his wrath, who have drunk to the dregs the bowl, the cup of staggering.
There is none to guide her among all the sons she has borne; there is none to take her by the hand among all the sons she has brought up.
These two things have happened to you-- who will console you?-- devastation and destruction, famine and sword; who will comfort you?
Your sons have fainted; they lie at the head of every street like an antelope in a net; they are full of the wrath of the LORD, the rebuke of your God.
Therefore hear this, you who are afflicted, who are drunk, but not with wine:
Thus says your Lord, the LORD, your God who pleads the cause of his people: “Behold, I have taken from your hand the cup of staggering; the bowl of my wrath you shall drink no more;
and I will put it into the hand of your tormentors, who have said to you, ‘Bow down, that we may pass over’; and you have made your back like the ground and like the street for them to pass over.”

Offertory: Arise, My Soul, Arise Dan Forrest

Suzannah Waddington, soprano

Arise, my soul, arise, shake off thy guilty fears. The bleeding Sacrifice in my behalf appears. Before the throne my Surety stands, before the throne my Surety stands; my name is written on His hands. Five bleeding wounds He bears, received on Calvary; they pour effectual prayers, they strongly plead for me. “Forgive him, O, forgive,” they cry, “Forgive him, O, forgive,” they cry, “Nor let that ransomed sinner die!” My God is reconciled, His pard’ning voice I hear; He owns me for a child, I can no longer fear. With confidence I now draw nigh, with confidence I now draw nigh, and, “Father, Abba, Father,” cry.
