Prelude: Be Thou My Vision arr. Bob Chilcott Suzannah Waddington, soprano

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart, be all else but naught to me, save that thou art; be thou my best thought in the day and the night, both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light. Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word; be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord; be thou my great Father, and I thy true son; be thou in my dwelling, and I with thee one. Be thou and thou only the first in my heart; O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art; great heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all.

Call to Worship

Doxology Old Hundredth

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, we lament how our sin dishonors Your Holy Name. Our lives demonstrate our true loyalties, betraying our devotion to lesser things. Forgive us for holding human reason above Your Word, for fearing peer pressure more than Your justice, for doing so many things apart from a view to Your glory, for wasting the days You have given us in trivial things, for seeking pleasure above holiness. Lord, help us, and have mercy upon us. Help us seek Your kingdom and righteousness, trusting You are sufficient to satisfy our deepest needs. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Romans 10:9–10

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Invocation

Hymn 55: To God Be the Glory To God Be the Glory

Responsive Reading: Psalm 87 (pew Bible p. 494)

Gloria Patri Meineke

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of Intercession (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Offertory: My Jesus I Love Thee arr. Dan Forrest
Suzannah Waddington, soprano

My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine. For Thee all the follies of sin I resign. My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou, if ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now. I'll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death, and praise Thee as long as Thou lendest my breath; and say when the death dew lies cold on my brow, if ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now. In mansions of glory, and endless delight, I'll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright. I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow, if ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

The Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper will be observed at the 9am, 11am, and 2pm services next Sunday, September 3.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism reminds us of the importance of coming to the Lord's Table in a worthy manner:

It is required of them that would worthily partake of the Lord's Supper, that they examine themselves of their knowledge to discern the Lord's body, of their faith to feed upon Him, of their repentance, love, and new obedience; lest, coming unworthily, they eat and drink judgment to themselves. (Shorter Catechism, Answer 97)

Suggested Bible passages for preparation: Psalm 23, Luke 22:14–23, John 4:7–14, 1 Cor. 11:17–32
