Prelude: The Woodcutter's Song Ralph Vaughan Williams Peter Cunningham, tenor

He that is down need fear no fall; He that is low, no pride; He that is humble, ever shall have God to be his guide. I am content with what I have, little be it or much; and, Lord contentment still I crave, because Thou savest such. Fulness to such a burden is, that go on pilgrimage, here little and hereafter bliss, is best from age to age.

Call to Worship

Doxology Old Hundredth

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Righteous Father, thank You that week by week You gather us for worship, where we can hear Your Word, call out to You in prayer, give tithes and offerings, and receive the sacraments. Thank You for how the Lord’s Day orders our lives and priorities, showing us that all of life is to be lived for Your glory. But Lord, we confess the lack of consistency in our lives; we praise You on Sunday, but our resolve so easily falters when we are on our own. We are weak vessels and prone to wander as lost sheep. O Father, strengthen us by Your Holy Spirit, guard us and guide us, and keep us to do Your will from day to day, for the glory of Christ our Savior. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 1:13–14

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Invocation

Hymn 32: Great Is Thy Faithfulness Faithfulness

Responsive Reading: Psalm 81 (pew Bible p. 491)

Gloria Patri Meineke

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of Intercession (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Offertory: King Ever Glorious John Stainer

Peter Cunningham

King ever glorious! The dews of death are gathering round Thee, upon the cross Thy foes have bound Thee, Thy strength is gone. Not in Thy Majesty, robed in heaven's supremest splendor, but in weakness and surrender, Thou hangest here. Who can be like Thee? Pilate high in Zion dwelling? Rome with arms the world compelling? Proud though they be! Thou art sublime. Far more awful in Thy weakness, more than kingly in Thy meekness, Son of God, Thou Son of God. Glory, and honor; let the world divide and take them; crown its monarchs and unmake them, but Thou, Thou wilt reign. Here in abasement; crownless, poor, disrobed, and bleeding; There, in glory interceding, Thou art the King!
