Call to Worship

Invocation

Hymn 80: Lord, with Glowing Heart I’d Praise Thee Ripley

Prayer of Confession

Our heavenly Father, we confess before you that we often depart from the principles laid down in your Word. We look for wisdom and direction from sources which will make us feel better, rather than looking to you to be made more like Christ. We shrink back from the crosses we are to bear, fearing suffering or inconvenience. Help us to see again that Jesus has already shouldered our greatest burden. Grant us grace to take his yoke upon us, knowing that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Matthew 11:28–30

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Doxology (Trinity Hymnal 732) Tallis’ Canon

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;

Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Prayer of Illumination (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

About Worship

The Lord’s Supper – A Seal of Salvation

Because the Reformers insisted on the uniqueness and the completely historical genuineness of the death and resurrection of Christ, the Supper became an important means of uniting believers to that event. Uniting us to this event, therefore, is the essential function of the sacrament. It is from that sacrifice—then and there—that we in our time and our place—here and now—are enlivened with eternal life. Christ’s sacrifice saves us; the Supper joins us to that sacrifice. The Supper “shows forth” the sacrifice and the benefits of the sacrifice. In the Supper we experience restored communion with God and with each other; both of which flow from that sacrifice. The main purpose of the Supper is to seal upon our consciences the power of that sacrifice so that we live in its power. Living in its power, we witness to the glory of God before the world.
