Doxology Old Hundredth

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Our Father, we praise you for our Great High Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ, who offered himself as the sacrifice for our sins, and in whose name we may come boldly to your throne of grace. We confess we come to you far less often than we sin. We allow our sins to pile up, and we get used to them. We become comfortable and lazy in our faith. O God, we underestimate sin's power, and overestimate our own ability. We pray your Holy Spirit would remove every sinful desire from us, that we might be increasingly separated from sin. Humble us, and give us grace to depend on you every moment of every day. Amen.

The Gospel’s Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 2:13–14

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Invocation

Hymn 78: O Bless the Lord, My Soul St. Michael

text: Isaac Watts (1719)

O bless the Lord, my soul; let all within me join,
and aid my tongue to bless his name, whose favors are divine.

O bless the Lord, my soul, nor let his mercies lie
forgotten in unthankfulness, and without praises die.

'Tis he forgives your sins, 'tis he relieves your pain,
'tis he that heals your sicknesses and makes you young again.

He crowns your life with love when ransomed from the grave;
he that redeemed my soul from hell has sovereign pow'r to save.

He fills the poor with good; he gives the suff'rers rest:
the Lord has judgments for the proud and justice for th'oppressed.

His wondrous works and ways he made by Moses known,
but sent the world his truth and grace by his beloved Son.

Responsive Reading: Psalm 1

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Gloria Patri Meineke

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of Intercession (concluding with The Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Hymn 672: Trust and Obey Trust And Obey Text: John Sammis (1887)

When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will, he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
but his smile quickly drives it away;
not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh nor a tear,
can abide while we trust and obey. (Refrain)

Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
but our toil he doth richly repay;
not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross,
but is blest if we trust and obey. (Refrain)

But we never can prove the delights of his love
until all on the altar we lay;
for the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows,
are for them who will trust and obey. (Refrain)

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet,
or we will walk by his side in the way;
what he says we will do, where he sends we will go,
never fear, only trust and obey. (Refrain)

Offertory: How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds arr. Harold Darke

Scripture Reading: Matthew 16:27–17:8

27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” 7:1 “And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.
4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.”

Sermon: Jesus Only Dr. Liam Goligher

"O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain:
Grant that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus the Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen."
